In the Castle of the Holy Grail, isolated from the outside world, the knighthood lives according to a strict set of rules, although signs of dissolution are already spreading in this sworn community. The reason for this lies in the misdeed of their leader, the Grail King Amfortas. He has incurred guilt by violating the Brotherhood's chastity commandment in a love affair with the demonic Kundry. He had the holy lance stolen by the adversary of the Grail Community Klingsor. In their possession, Klingsor could injure Amfortas incurably.
Exposed to physical decay, Amfortas can no longer fulfil his function as a leader. With his misdemeanour, he increasingly becomes a burden for the community.
While Amfortas despairs of his guilt and his failure, the knights of the Grail Community refuse Amfortas the long-awaited death: since only Amfortas may reveal the life-giving Grail. According to the prophecy, only a pure gate can redeem Amfortas and become the new Grail King.
When he, Parsifal, also appears promptly, he has to undergo a recording ritual in which he fails and has to leave the Castle of the Grail again. Determined to become part of the knighthood, after all, he embarks on a search for the holy lance.
On his journey through a labyrinth of tunnels and prison cells, the prison built in 1898, where the audience accompanies him, he penetrates ever deeper into a world of violence, seduction and hatred.
In the staging of aufBruch, Parsifal's story is a parable of a world in which the individual must decide whether or not to place drive satisfaction and personal advancement above universal moral values.
